In these time of economic restraints across Europe the issue of work life balance is often not high on the agendas of many companies, particularly SMEs. In the UK the Government and businesses have quickly realised the benefits of work-life balance in one very special area – that of retaining skills through difficult times.

Two specific reports demonstrate this: 'Building Britain's Recovery: Achieving Full Employment' puts work-life balance to the forefront as a way of working through the current situation. 'Flexible Working: Challenges for Business' is a report produced by the UK's House of Commons All-Party Parliamentary Small Business Group. Evidence is presented to this committee from small businesses in the UK about how work-life balance has been used to maintain the business during the economic downturn.
