Severe disruption to the second Italian Champions Workshop with fringe benefits

Due to a general strike and demonstration organised by the Italian General Labor Confederation (GCIL) the second transnational workshop of the EuroBalance project was disrupted. Italian Newspapers indicated that hundreds of thousands of students and workers were demonstrating across the whole of Italy demanding less tax for workers and retirees and a fairer tax that can guarantee universal rights such as education and health, stable and better jobs - and especially for young people - a better future for our children.

Despite the disruiption caused to local transport, schools, and general life and work, the second workshop still went ahead – though with severly depleted attendance (the Italian partner, Diciannove, will be following up champions and beneficiaries who were unable to attend). A useful discussion about the Eurobalance work and its impact in Italy ensued, with champions expressing the desire to continue with their work after the end of the project.

It was commonly agreed that the Champions’ challenge was to increase the cultural awareness of the organisation to the possibility of adopting WLB practices. Introduce new ways of thinking about work and work structures. Also, chmpions were particularly excited about the development of the WikiGuide (discussed in Newsletter 5) that will enable them and others to develop the Italian version of the Guide in ways that suit the Italian situation.
